The eastern rat snake is one of the largest and most commonly encountered snakes in the eastern United States. Adults are typically uniform black, though juveniles show a strongly blotched pattern that fades with age.

An excellent climber, it is often found ascending trees, barns, and stone walls in pursuit of prey or basking sites, making it a familiar sight to rural residents.
