Overview
The European blind snake is a primitive, highly fossorial species belonging to the blind snake family, adapted for a life spent almost entirely beneath the soil surface. It is one of the few blind snake species found in Europe.
It is entirely harmless to humans, having no functional venom apparatus and no capacity to bite in any meaningful way. It is often mistaken for an earthworm by those who encounter it.
How to identify it
- Small, cylindrical, worm-like body of uniform diameter
- Smooth, shiny scales in a pinkish-brown, tan, or grayish color
- Eyes reduced to tiny dark spots beneath translucent scales, providing only rudimentary light perception
- No visible neck; head and tail ends are similarly blunt and hard to distinguish at a glance
- Adults typically measure 20-40 cm (8-16 in)
Habitat & range
Found in loose, sandy, or rocky soils, under stones, in leaf litter, and within ant or termite nests. Its range spans the Balkans, southeastern Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, and parts of the Middle East.
Behavior, diet & reproduction
Almost exclusively fossorial and nocturnal when active near the surface, otherwise remaining underground. It feeds on ant and termite larvae, eggs, and pupae, often entering their nests to forage. Reproduction is oviparous, with small clutches of elongated eggs laid in moist underground chambers.
