Overview
The Lake Taal sea snake is one of the very few sea snakes to have adapted completely to freshwater, living exclusively in Lake Taal, a large volcanic caldera lake on Luzon Island in the Philippines. This lake has no direct connection to the sea, making the species' presence there a striking example of evolutionary adaptation.
It is considered critically threatened due to its extremely restricted single-lake distribution and ongoing environmental pressures, including volcanic activity, pollution, and fishing practices in the lake.
How to identify it
- Pale grayish to olive body with faint darker banding
- Small head not distinct from the neck
- Retains the paddle-shaped tail typical of marine sea snakes despite freshwater habitat
- Relatively small, slender body
- Distinguished from all other sea snakes by its unique confinement to a single freshwater lake
Habitat & range
Found exclusively in Lake Taal, a volcanic crater lake on Luzon Island in the Philippines. It occupies open water and shallow zones of the lake, with no access to marine habitats.
Behavior, diet & reproduction
Feeds on small fish native to Lake Taal, likely gobies and similar species. Fully aquatic and adapted entirely to freshwater despite descending from marine sea snake ancestors, giving birth to live young in the lake.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Lake Taal sea snake dangerous?
It is venomous, but it is extremely rare and localized, with minimal risk to people.
Where does it live?
Only in Lake Taal, a volcanic crater lake in the Philippines, with no ocean access.
Is it endangered?
Yes, its extremely restricted single-lake range makes it highly vulnerable to environmental changes.
How did a sea snake end up in a freshwater lake?
It descends from marine ancestors that became isolated in the lake and adapted fully to freshwater conditions over time.
