The Afro-Asian Sand Snake is identified by its very slender, fast-moving body, prominent longitudinal stripes running the length of the trunk, and large eyes with round pupils that reflect its highly visual, actively foraging lifestyle in open desert and semi-desert habitat.

The dorsal ground color is usually sandy tan, pale brown, or grayish, closely matching the arid substrates it inhabits. Several dark stripes, ranging from thin pinstripes to broader bands, run parallel along the length of the body from behind the head to the tail, sometimes broken into a series of elongated spots on closer inspection. The belly is typically pale and unmarked, contrasting with the striped upper body.
