Aurora House Snake

The aurora house snake is a modestly sized, secretive snake restricted to parts of southern Africa, noted among naturalists for its attractive coloration. It belongs to the house snake group, a lineage of harmless constrictors widespread across the African continent.

Completely harmless to humans, the aurora house snake is of interest primarily for its striking pattern rather than any medical significance, though like its relatives it plays a role in controlling small vertebrate populations.

• Dark olive, brown, or blackish body
• A broad, bright orange to reddish stripe running down the center of the back from neck to tail
• Smooth, glossy scales
• Pale yellowish underside
• Round pupils and a small head barely distinct from the neck

The bold central orange stripe against a dark body is diagnostic and distinguishes it from other house snakes in the region.

This species occurs in grassland, fynbos, and moist savanna habitats within its restricted range in South Africa and neighboring Eswatini. It is a secretive, ground-dwelling snake often found beneath logs, rocks, and leaf litter, particularly in higher-rainfall areas.

Aurora house snakes are nocturnal or crepuscular, feeding primarily on small lizards, frogs, and occasionally rodents, which they subdue by constriction. They are shy and rarely seen, tending to remain hidden under cover during the day. Reproduction is oviparous, with females laying small clutches of eggs in sheltered, moist sites.
