Overview

The Ornamental Snake is a small, secretive elapid restricted to the Brigalow Belt region of central coastal Queensland. It is closely associated with cracking clay soils and gilgai (melon-hole) microhabitats.

Due to extensive habitat clearing across its range, it is considered a vulnerable species and a conservation priority in Queensland.

How to identify it

  • Brown to reddish-brown dorsal coloration with darker blotches or spots, giving a patterned 'ornamental' appearance
  • Pale belly
  • Robust, moderately stout body for its size
  • Smooth scales
  • Vertically elliptical pupil, unusual among Australian elapids
  • Adults typically 40-60 cm
  • Blotched pattern and elliptical pupil help distinguish it from similar small elapids

Habitat & range

Restricted to cracking clay soils and gilgai depressions within Brigalow woodland of central Queensland. Shelters in soil cracks and under surface debris in these specialized microhabitats.

Behavior, diet & reproduction

Nocturnal, sheltering in soil cracks during the day and emerging at night to forage. Feeds primarily on frogs. Gives birth to live young. Populations are threatened by ongoing habitat clearing for agriculture.
